Here’s what’s happening in the sales world this week:

While there are nearly 15 million salespeople in the United States, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a huge percentage of those are retail sales reps, a somewhat different role than B2B or even (most) B2C selling. A recent article in The List covers the role and gives some insights into how much retail reps make. You can read it here.
A woman recently went viral on TikTok after telling a story about her stint as a sales rep at a toilet paper manufacturer. After attending a sales kickoff, she was told that she wouldn’t be getting the promotion she was hoping for for a very inappropriate reason: he (the manager) was attracted to her (he put it in much cruder terms). The 20 Best Companies to Sell For in 2022

If you’re considering switching sales roles in the near future, it helps to make an informed decision. We wanted to find out which companies are ranked as the best employers for salespeople and sales teams, so we reached out to our friends at RepVue to get the scoop.

4. Chili Piper: Chili Piper is a meeting lifecycle automation platform that helps revenue teams increase their conversion rates. Chili Piper has high ratings for Culture and Leadership. Chili Piper's sales professionals are reporting that 66.0% of the team is hitting their quota.

“I’m in the car business, and we definitely see a whole lot of weird stuff. The one story that stands out to me happened around 2009 or 2010. I remember because it was in the few years after the great recession.

A guy came in with his wife to look at a pickup we had parked out front. They originally were interested in the truck, but then the wife started looking at a Jeep for herself. They went on a test drive and then we sat down to go over the numbers.

So we take a look at the guy’s credit, which is pretty good, and then he says he only has a few thousand dollars left to pay on his truck. Then I asked him about the other vehicle he had on there, which was financed through Toyota Financial and had about $20k on it. As soon as I asked about that car, the guy turned absolutely beet red, and I knew something was wrong.

His wife looks at him, and says, “Are you f*&^$#g kidding me!? Are you serious right now?” And the guy looks at her and then looks at me and said, “Oh, there must be some kind of mistake.” At this point, I’m just sitting there, watching my deal evaporate before my eyes. And the wife is sitting there shaking her head and tapping her foot, while the guy is trying to talk his way out of this, and (very badly) and obviously lying.

After a few minutes, the wife gets up and leaves, and the guy apologizes to me and says, “Ahhh. I bought a RAV4 for a… friend of mine. I thought it was going on my business account. Really sorry for wasting your time.” Then he got up and followed his wife out into the parking lot and left. I am pretty sure the guy got caught paying for his mistress’s car. Whoops.”

Dear Quota Team,

I’m not sure if you can help with this situation or not. I admit it’s pretty weird, and also kind of embarrassing, which is why I feel better writing about it than talking to people who know me and this other person.

Basically, I work with somebody who I absolutely can’t stand. He is a sales rep who is in my department but not on my team. We work in the same office and see each other every day. I am not exaggerating how much we hate each other. We have almost come to blows before, that’s how bad it is.

Everything started after this person, who I barely knew, made fun of me in front of our mutual coworkers. I told him at the time, right to his face, that if he had a problem, we could go outside, and he backed down and said I was overreacting.

Ever since that day, we stare each other down whenever we walk by each other. Neither one of us has said anything, but the tension has been simmering for a while. It makes me so angry that some days, it’s all I think about.

I know it’s juvenile. I know I should let it go. I know I should be the bigger person. But I feel like I just can’t let this go, because if I back down, then the bully wins. I am so angry about this that it makes me want to quit my job, but I don’t even want to do that, because then he’ll win.

I know this is crazy, but I’m being as honest as I can. What should I do

Dear Angry,

Thanks for writing in and being honest. Here’s what we think:

1. You need to stop fantasizing about fighting this person. It’s not healthy, and there’s almost zero chance that it will go down the way you picture it, and without one (or both of you) going to jail, losing your jobs, or winding up in the hospital.

You already know that this is dumb, pointless, and a bit crazy, you just can’t seem to let it go. Which brings us to the next point:

2. You can either let it go by figuring out a way to get over it or by sitting down and working it out with your coworker, or it’s just going to consume you until you’re a failed salesperson with anger issues and terrible relationships.

Winston Churchill said, “You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw rocks at every dog that barks,” and you will never accomplish anything you hope to accomplish if you let some idiot you work with stand in your way. If you can’t perform while he’s in the same building as you, then get a new job. But right now, you’re putting your ego above your goals, above your family’s well being, and above your own physical and mental health.

Take a step back, look at the big picture, then let it go. Forty years from now, are you going to be thinking about that dummy you used to work with? If not, then stop wasting so much time and emotional energy on him now. Good luck!
