Here’s what’s happening in the sales world this week:

An opera singer-turned-car salesman is going viral for his arias about Corvettes and Camaros. Andrew Hiers didn't plan on becoming the world's favorite singing car salesman. But after months without a steady performing gig, the classically trained singer took a job at Boniface Hiers Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram earlier this year. (Despite sharing the dealership’s last name, Hiers isn’t related to the owners; it’s just an oddly perfect coincidence.) Now, he’s gone viral for his operatic videos promoting the dealer’s cars. Volkswagen dealers have filed a lawsuit, seeking class-action status against the manufacturer, claiming it’s violating the law by bypassing them with the launch of its newest direct-to-consumer vehicles, the all-electric brand Scout. Scout plans to sell its trucks and SUVs directly to customers, bypassing dealers entirely. While other electric newcomers such as Rivian Automotive and Lucid Motors have taken the same approach, dealers said that because Scout is a Volkswagen Group company, it must sell cars through independent, franchised dealerships. The Strange Story of the Man Who Literally Sold the Brooklyn Bridge

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, New York City was expanding rapidly. Millions of immigrants arrived through Ellis Island, hoping to build new lives. The city’s skyline, bridges, and infrastructure symbolized opportunity. They also created opportunities for fraud.

One of the most notorious con artists of the era was George C. Parker, a man remembered for repeatedly “selling” the Brooklyn Bridge to unsuspecting buyers.

A City Full of Newcomers

The Brooklyn Bridge opened in 1883 and quickly became one of the most recognizable structures in the United States. It connected Manhattan and Brooklyn and represented engineering progress and economic promise.

At the same time, New York was receiving waves of immigrants who were unfamiliar with American institutions and property laws. Many arrived with savings and ambitions to start businesses.

Parker built his schemes around this environment. He targeted newcomers who believed that purchasing infrastructure such as bridges, roads, or public property could generate revenue through tolls or fees. These ideas were not entirely implausible. Private ownership of utilities, railroads, and transit systems was common at the time.

How the Scheme Worked

Parker presented himself as a legitimate property owner or government agent. He set up offices that appeared official and produced documents that looked authentic.

Victims were shown contracts, maps, and deeds claiming to grant ownership of the Brooklyn Bridge or other landmarks. Some accounts suggest Parker even used accomplices posing as clerks or lawyers to reinforce the illusion of legitimacy.

Buyers believed they were acquiring the right to control access to the bridge and collect tolls from people crossing it. After money changed hands, the victims would sometimes attempt to enforce their “ownership.”

Police occasionally had to remove newly arrived immigrants who tried to block traffic or collect tolls on the bridge.

Repetition and Persistence

The story is often retold as a single incident, but Parker reportedly carried out versions of the scheme many times over several decades.

The Brooklyn Bridge was not the only property he claimed to sell. Historical reports describe him offering ownership of landmarks such as Madison Square Garden, Grant’s Tomb, and even the Statue of Liberty.

His ability to repeat these scams relied on constant turnover among the city’s immigrant population and the difficulty authorities faced in tracking fraud across large, rapidly growing neighborhoods.

Persuasion Tactics

Accounts of Parker’s schemes show several tactics that made the fraud believable.

Authority signals played a major role. Parker dressed well, rented respectable office space, and displayed official-looking documents. These cues suggested legitimacy before any detailed questions were asked.

Complex paperwork also helped reinforce the illusion. Contracts and deeds filled with legal language gave buyers the sense that the transaction followed proper procedures.

He also relied on social reinforcement. Accomplices sometimes acted as staff members or witnesses, making the situation appear routine rather than suspicious.

Finally, Parker exploited information gaps. Many immigrants were unfamiliar with how public infrastructure was owned or governed in the United States. Without clear knowledge of the system, buyers had little way to recognize the fraud immediately.

Arrest and Legacy

Authorities pursued Parker for years, but the schemes continued until he was eventually sentenced to life in prison in 1928. He spent the rest of his life at Sing Sing and died there in 1936.

Today, the phrase “selling the Brooklyn Bridge” has become shorthand for a deal that is clearly too good to be true.

The story persists because it illustrates how easily confidence and appearance can create credibility. Parker’s schemes depended on persuasion techniques that mimicked legitimate transactions closely enough to convince people who were trying to find their place in a new country.

The Brooklyn Bridge still stands as a symbol of New York’s growth. Parker’s story remains a reminder that confidence, paperwork, and presentation can influence decisions even when the underlying offer has no legal basis at all.

Back when I worked in inbound telecom sales, I used to have to occasionally pick up the late shift. Most calls at that hour were simple: people asking about installation availability or whether we offered service on their street.

One night, after nine o’clock, I got a guy who immediately said, “I know why you people won’t install service in my neighborhood.. I pulled up his address and the system showed what it always showed: not serviceable. There were no lines there yet. I explained that we just hadn’t built infrastructure on his street.

That’s when the yelling started. According to him, this had nothing to do with infrastructure. It was “local politics.” The mayor, zoning boards, backroom deals—apparently my company was intentionally blocking his neighborhood from getting internet, and I was somehow part of the operation.

I tried explaining that I was just reading what the system said and didn’t have any control over it. That only made him louder. After about five straight minutes of being screamed at, I finally did what any tired rep might do and hung up.

Thirty seconds later, my phone rang again. It was the same guy! Somehow he’d been routed back to me even though there were dozens of other people working that night. He launched right back into the conspiracy like we’d just paused the conversation. So I hung up again. Forty seconds later the phone rang again. Same guy.

At that point I realized something incredible: out of all the agents in the company that worked in our region, this man had somehow routed himself back to me three times in a row. Which, honestly, was the most convincing evidence I’d heard that there might actually be a conspiracy.

Dear Quota Team,

I’m 32 and have been in sales for seven years. For the last three, the money has been good. Last year I cleared a little over $240k. Five years ago that number would have sounded insane to me.

The weird thing is, the more I make, the more it feels like I have to keep making it. When I first started doing well, I upgraded my life a bit. Bought a house. Nice car. Started traveling more. Nothing outrageous, just things that felt like normal rewards after grinding for years.

The problem is I’m not even sure I want to stay in sales forever. I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it either. Sometimes I think about trying something else, maybe something slower paced. But then I look at my expenses and realize I’ve basically upgraded to a life that I can’t afford unless I keep earning sales money.

I guess what I’m wondering is: how do you get out of this without blowing up your whole life? Or maybe that’s not even the right question. Honestly, I don’t even know if this is a question as much as just wanting to get it off my chest.

You don’t have to blow up your life. You just have to make choices. Start by lowering the monthly burn wherever you reasonably can and directing the difference into savings. The more months of living expenses you build, the more options you create for yourself.

If you’re serious about making a career change, even one that comes with a pay cut, then prove it by downsizing your life and making those trade-offs. Who knows, you might decide you’re happier with less pressure to perform. If not, you can always go back to sales. Millions of people have done it. Good luck.
